Early Works

Works from 2011 to 2016

Early works 2011 to 2015

These paintings are early observations of still life and landscapes. I was getting use to the medium acrylic and painting certain objects around the house. Then I was interested in painting landscapes when visiting Dartmoor in Devon. There I took pictures and then made paintings out of them. Even though the colours were not accurate, it was a first step to find a style of painting and subject matter that I could expand and improve on. This was a learning curve through experimentation.

Foundation Work 2012 to 2013

First Year Work 2013 to 2014

First Year 2013 to 2014

For the first year, I focused on creating illusionistic effects with different types of brushes when making landscapes. For example I used a flat brush to paint the sky, using the tip of the brush and creating a dabbing motion to create the foliage of trees, a palette knife to create the the texture and structure of tree branches. I tried out oils that year as it was a good medium to test out the style and to experiment on, as the paint was slow drying, it aloud me to take my time, mix colours and blend them together. I was working on early scenes taken from Devon.

Second Year Work 2014 to 2015

Second Year 2014 to 2015

For the second year I was interested in the Old Chinese Masters style of landscape painting. I decided to incorporate that with the traditional English landscapes scenes. On that year, I went to Devon again and took new pictures that I could later on work with and by using this new style. With this new style, I wanted to use a medium that I had not used before, Ink on Chinese calligraphy paper and cartridge paper. I also used Chinese paint brushes. With these experimentations I then went back to watercolours as it was more versatile and easier to use and experiment with. Later on for a group project, I used Appropriation to relate landscapes with environmental pollution as a topic. It was to incorporate factories and smog into the tranquil scenes of the countryside of Devon and how that can effect the future in countrysides if pollution continues.

Third Year Work 2015 to 2016

Third Year 2015 to 2016

Finally, for the third year I decided to expand on the idea of Appropriation by still using Devon as the main subject matter and by taking certain elements out from the primary sources, these elements could be a sky, tree or building and to then place them into another scene or a scene created from my imagination just to give it a different persona, identity. This makes the scene more bizarre and represents places that do not actually exist but could exist in a fantasy, surreal landscape. For the experimentations, I used watercolours and for the final pieces, I used acrylic.
